SABAH ELECTION RESULT. WHO SHALL BE APPOINTED THE CHIEF MINISTER AND FORM THE NEW GOVERNMENT?

by e.s. shankar

The PEOPLE of Sabah have spoken and we must accept the result. Officially, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) won the elections with 38 seats as follows. CLICK HERE.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) - 17
BN (Barisan Nasional) - 14
Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) - 7
The other winners were:
Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) - 29
Parti Keadilan Rakyar (PKR) - 2
Parti Pertubuhan Kinabalu Progresif Bersatu (UPKO) - 1
Independents - 3
Total seats: 73
Under Sabah's Constitution:
"The Yang DiPertua Negeri (YDPN) shall appoint as Chief Minister a member of the Legislative Assembly who in his judgement is likely to command the confidence of the majority of the members of the Assembly..."
However, GRS is only a coalition and not not a registered political party.
So, the YDPN may well appoint as Chief Minister, Shafie Apdal, since his Warisan is the registered political party which won the most seats (29), and ask him to form the government with others, if he can.
For that, Shafie requires a minimum 37 seats (8 more). Much therefore depends on whether Shafee can persuade PBS (7 seats), PKR (2 seats), UPKO (1 seat) and the 3 Independents to join Warisan. That would give him 42 seats and a fairly comfortable majority of 11 seats over the remaining coalition members of GRS.
So, it's neither quite over for Shafie Apdal and Warisan nor timely for the Semburit (backdoor) #NotMyGovt and #NotMyPM Muhyiddin to pop the (non-alcoholic) champagne bottle and celebrate just yet. It's SHOWTIME and we all have the front seats.

As Najib said; "There are endless possibilities"!!!
